Cosplay & Contest Guidelines
*No competing with a costume you have ever won a Top 3 spot with at a Canal Walk Cosplay Contest.
*Original Designs, Gender Bends, Gijinka, etc. are allowed to compete.
*Opportunity to perform a skit with your own audio is possible for those participants who want to go the extra mile.
*Group Participation is allowed at all contests – but participants will be judged individually.
*Participants under the age of 18 must have the written consent of their parent or guardian to enter or must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
*Winners of gift cards will be required to produce their identity document/birth certificate when claiming their prize.
*Each participant will receive an entry number that will need to be visible on their costume at all times during the competition.
*Participants can enter one of three divisions, Bought, Novice or Experienced, to give new Cosplayers as well as seasoned Cosplayers a chance to participate. Any participant can compete in the experienced division, from which one winner will be chosen. Experienced cosplayers may not enter the novice division, from which one winner will be chosen.
*A participant who has competed and won any major awards like “Best in Show” or placed within Top 3 in any contest outside of the Canal Walk Expo may not enter the novice division.
*Participants may choose to compete in a higher division but may not compete in a lower division. If a participant’s costume is deemed unfair to enter, they can still present the costume as an exhibition entry and it will not be judged.
*Self-crafted costumes can earn higher scores with proof of work provided either printed or on mobile device. Failure to provide a reference image (ideally front, back and side views of cosplayed concept) when competing will result in a score penalty.
*All participants are required to preregister. The register for entry will be available at the Centre Court Stage on Saturday, 29 October, 1 hour before the competition for registration. No late entries will be accepted.
*The competition takes place at Canal Walk Shopping Centre’s Centre Court Stage on Saturday, 29 October at 1pm for Novice and Bought participants and 2pm for the experienced participants.
*No entry fees are applicable or payable for the competition.
*The Organiser reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disallow any participant from participating and to eliminate any participant from the competition.
*Participants must ensure that their costumes are considered family friendly. Any inappropriate costumes are strictly prohibited. Nudity, weapons, live steel or dangerous real weapons. Live steel is defined as swords, knives, bayonets, cane swords, and/or any other objects made of metal, which can take an edge. This holds true regardless of whether the object is actually sharp or not.
*No real guns, stun guns or airguns. Any realistic replica of a gun needs to be marked with bright red on the tip of the barrel. Water guns are allowed as long as they are not loaded.
*Explosives or chemicals of any kind are not allowed, including but not limited to smoke powder, sparkles and fireworks.
*The Organiser has the right to restrict any other item deemed harmful to anyone in any way.
*Bokens, wooden swords, walking sticks and weapons/props made from wood, foam, bondo, resin, plaster and cardboard will be allowed. Failure to adhere to this will result in immediate disqualification.
*No frightening of people, particularly children, with props.
*Participants will be judged on various criteria, including accuracy of representation, presentation, effort and quality.
*Consideration will given to additional criteria including entertainment value, stage presence, technique, showmanship, and overall performance.
*The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
*The organiser will not be held responsible for any disputes arising from the competition or prize awards.
