Bandai Namco postponed the release of the game in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One until July 9 and PC (Steam) until July 10 due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the west, the launch is scheduled for July 10, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Steam).

The game follows the same storyline as the Sword Art Online manga (volumes 9-18) and the Sword Art Online Alicization anime.

However, the game doesn't follow the same path as the Sword Art Online Alicization - War of Underworld anime, which debuted in October 2019. Instead, at that point, the game will branch out into its own story. The staff consulted original creator Reki Kawahara, who wanted a game that would demonstrate the original story, at least in the first half.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America describes the game as follows:

Play as the main character in the series, Kirito, and dive into "Underworld", a mysterious virtual world set in the Alicization arc of the anime series. With epic battles, a stunning JRPG skin, and an expansive world to explore, Kirito's journey in the latest Sword Art Online game is about to begin. [...]

We remind you that Sword Art Online: Alicization premiered on October 6, 2018 in Japan. The series is adapting the entire "Arc of Alicization" from Reki Kawahara's original novels and will span a total of four courses. The first two aired between October 2018 and March 2019, and the third course, titled Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, premiered in October 2019. And the current fourth will debut on July 11.

You've imagined what a series would look like based on this popular game and My Hero Academia, some have created all kinds of drawings and paintings of how the series would look, however nobody has gotten as far as a YouTube user - Joshee K, Creator of his own opening, with a duration of 2 minutes, we can see some of the most representative characters of the game in the heat of battle.
